Katharina & Pilipe (West Stoke House, Chichester)

All Categories, Wedding Photography

Katharina & pilipe got married in the lovely West Stoke House, located near the south coast of England.  The day started off a bit cloudy but conditions soon became a photographer’s dream when blazing sun broke through the large puffy white clouds, perfect for taking photographs!  I knew Katharina from my college days way back in 1994 – 1996 when we were both students on the same photography course, so it was a pleasure to shoot for her and husband Pilipe.  The wedding was a great occasion, the families were German and Portuguese and so there was a very international feel throughout.  Katharina and pilipe were so natural in front of the camera, it really was made so easy for me!

Tiina & Marco (Tampere, Finland)

All Categories, Wedding Photography

Tiina and Marco’s wedding took place on the edge of a beautiful lake in the heart of Finland.  A disused railway station provided a great location for some of the photographs with it’s peeling paint and old wood.  The wedding was also attended by the Channel 4 television station who were filming for a forthcoming documentary.  I try and travel as light as possible for destination weddings but it’s good to bring my lighting if possible, a single Bowens 750+ mono bloc came with me for the trip.  The macro and fish-eye lenses stayed at home, most of this wedding was shot on my trusty 50mm F1.4!

Deborah & Paul (The Berkeley, London)

All Categories, Wedding Photography

The Berkeley Hotel, (Knightsbridge), was the venue for Deborah and Paul’s wedding in London.  The iconic Blue Bar within the Berkeley was the scene for some conceptual images of the bride and groom as well as the collective bridal party, the bar is made famous by it’s Lutyens Blue colour scheme by designer David Collins.  Deborah designed the sumptuous reception table settings which were some of the most amazing I’ve seen.  The ceremony took place in a beautiful church in London’s Mayfair district, all this made for a fabulous wedding.

What equipment do you use?

All Categories, For Brides, For Photographers

I’m often asked what photographic equipment I use.  A good photograph is based on a good idea, creativity and a good technical understanding, equipment is always secondary.  Having said this, a camera bag filled with great cameras and lenses can help!  The golden rule for me is to use prime, (fixed focal length), lenses whenever possible.  Prime lenses are not the standard zoom type of lens but are better quality due to the quality of the glass, there are also less groups of glass elements within the lens which ultimately means they produce sharper images.  I also often take an old film camera along with me to weddings as well as my regular digital kit, there are some style of shots that digital cameras just cannot quite capture, (yet!)

My camera bag includes;

Canon 5D MkII

Canon 5D Mk I (Spare)

Canon 16-35mm F2.8L

Canon 85mm F1.2L

Canon 50mm F1.4

Sigma 105mm Macro F2.8

Sigma 15mm Fisheye F2.8

Canon 70-200mm IS F2.8L

Canon 580EX II Flashgun

2x Bowens 500DX Mono blocs

2x Bowens 750 Plus Mono blocs

Sally Mann Exhibition (The Family and the Land).

All Categories, For Photographers

Sally Mann is an American photographer who’s work can be referred to as rather morbid.  The images are powerful and thought provoking though, there is a very dark theme which runs throughout.  Sally’s processing technique is also very interesting.  The exhibition can be seen between 18th June to 19th September 2010 at The Photographer’s Gallery, 16-18 Ramillies Street, London W1F 7LW.
